What ChatPDF is

You upload a document, ask a question in English, Polish, or any other language, and the tool answers based on the file's content, citing the specific fragments and pages the information came from.

Use cases include academic work (summarizing long research papers before a full read), business reports (quickly pulling key figures out of a quarterly financial statement without scanning dozens of pages), and literature (asking about plot threads in a book you're currently reading). That versatility means ChatPDF appeals to both students and corporate analysts.

Multilingual answers are a meaningful advantage over many competing tools in this category that focus solely on English — a user can upload a document in English and ask questions in Polish, getting answers in the language of the question, which makes the tool genuinely useful for people working with international documentation who aren't necessarily fluent in reading every source language.

Secure cloud processing with automatic data deletion after a set period addresses concerns about uploaded document privacy — relevant when working with confidential material, though as with any cloud tool, the final decision to upload a sensitive document (say, a contract with a confidentiality clause) should factor in the vendor's privacy policy, not just feature convenience.

The freemium model — a free daily question limit, a paid plan for heavy users — is a typical approach in this category of tools using costly language models as a backend to process long documents, where every query requires processing a substantial amount of contextual text.

Compared to simply copying PDF content into a general AI assistant's chat window, ChatPDF has the advantage of precise citation of source pages and fragments — the user knows exactly where each part of the answer came from, which makes verification and citation easier in academic work or a report where the information source carries legal or academic weight.

For students writing a thesis based on dozens of sources, ChatPDF cuts down the time needed to initially scan each article for relevant fragments — instead of reading the whole text, you can ask directly what a given article says on a specific topic, and only then decide whether it's worth reading in full.

The limitation is dependence on OCR quality and the original PDF's structure — scanned, low-quality documents with no text layer can give worse results than PDFs natively generated from a text editor, a technical limitation shared across the whole document-analysis tool category, not just ChatPDF. Anyone building an ai notes archive on top of this should expect to need manual correction in such cases.

For lawyers reviewing long contracts before signing, being able to ask directly about specific clauses (say, "what's the notice period") instead of manually scanning the document word by word saves time under deadline pressure — though the AI's answer should be treated as a starting point for one's own verification, not a final legal opinion saved uncritically as ready-made ai notes for later use.

The tool doesn't replace an ai notes system for durably archiving conclusions drawn from documents read — once a conversation about a specific file is closed, the user has to manually move important findings into their own notepad if they want to keep them longer than a single work session with that file.

In short, ChatPDF is a solid, multilingual tool for conversing with PDF documents, useful for students, analysts, and researchers — it cuts research time, but needs a separate ai notes system to complement it if conclusions are meant to outlast a single chat session rather than living only as ad hoc these notes content inside the conversation window.

What SumizAI is

A note-taking application built around a conversation with an AI model. You ask a question, the answer streams back, and the answers worth keeping become Markdown notes — filed into a vault that is a folder on your own disk.

A vault is a directory holding base.md, a generated table of contents up to six levels deep, and a notes/ folder with one .md file per note. Before a note is written it is checked against the ones already there, so the fourth note about the same idea gets merged instead of added. Links between notes are ordinary Markdown links to files that exist.

The model is never ours: you bring your own API key to one of seven providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server — and pay that provider directly. A question sends the table of contents plus at most five relevant notes within a 24,000-character budget, and the app shows you which five it used.

Every answer kept this way becomes one of these ai notes, ready to search again months later without hunting back through old chats.

Where they differ

  • ChatPDF is a place to have the conversation. SumizAI is not a chatbot — the conversation is the input, not the product. What comes out of it is a .md file with a title, a place in base.md and a duplicate check against the notes already in the vault. If you only want to talk to a model, you do not need SumizAI.
  • ChatPDF is freemium: there is a free tier and a paid one, and the line between them is the thing to read before committing. SumizAI has one plan at a dollar a month, so there is no feature held back for a higher tier — and an unpaid account still opens and exports every vault it already has.
  • AlternativeTo's description of ChatPDF does not mention Markdown, so check what format your notes end up in before you fill it up. SumizAI writes standard .md files to a folder you picked, and an unpaid account can still export all of them.
  • Both are run from the EU: SumizAI's operator is registered in Poland and the servers are in Germany.
