What Fluster is
What Fluster is
Fluster is a free, open-source academic note-taking app, designed specifically for researchers, offering Rust-powered interactive plotting, dynamic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), and comprehensive research tools in one integrated platform. MDX-based notes connect to local, integrated AI for chatting with your own notes.
Key features
Local AI lets you chat with the content of your own notes, ask general questions, and create vector embeddings for semantic search. The app combines bibliography management with seamless integration into a daily research workflow, and Rust-powered interactive plotting delivers performance hard to match in web-based solutions. All the functionality — RAG, vector database, notes — runs in one coherent place without switching between separate tools.
Who it's for
Fluster appeals to researchers and academics who need a combination of academic notes, bibliography management, and local AI for semantically searching their own material, without sending sensitive research data to an external cloud.
Use cases
In practice, Fluster works well for keeping literature notes with automatic citation management, asking questions of your own notes through local AI instead of manually searching, and building interactive charts to visualize research data directly in the notebook.
Pricing and business model
Fluster is entirely free and open source — everything a modern researcher needs, in one place, at no cost. Development is sustained by the open-source community around the project.
Limitations and what to watch for
The app is currently undergoing a rewrite in Swift, meaning some features may change between versions during this transition period. Availability is limited to macOS, iOS, and Linux, with no native Windows or Android version.
AI notes semantically searched by local AI
Pasting an external assistant's answer as an ai notes entry into Fluster immediately lets you use the app's local AI to semantically search that content through vector embeddings — such an ai notes entry becomes part of a searchable knowledge base, not an isolated text file.
Local AI as an answer to research data sensitivity
The decision to integrate AI running locally, rather than sending note content to an external API, reflects real needs of researchers working with as-yet-unpublished data or sensitive source material.
What's worth checking before choosing
Before choosing Fluster, check the current state of the app's Swift rewrite, and whether your platform (macOS, iOS, Linux) is fully supported in the current version.
Bottom line
Fluster is a free, open academic tool combining notes, bibliography, and local AI with RAG, at the cost of an ongoing technical rebuild. Anyone who wants ai notes from conversations with an external AI to land in the system automatically without manual pasting will find a better-fitting tool elsewhere.
Comparison with SumizAI
Fluster and SumizAI differ in scope and AI model. Fluster is an academic notebook with local AI for searching your own notes and managing bibliography. SumizAI generates these notes directly from a conversation with an AI model — including a local Ollama for similar privacy — question, answer, Markdown file in the vault with a title and place in the table of contents assigned automatically. Anyone who needs a specialized research tool with bibliography management will pick Fluster; anyone who wants these notes from AI conversations to be created automatically on any topic will find SumizAI the better-fitting tool.

What SumizAI is
A note-taking application built around a conversation with an AI model. You ask a question, the answer streams back, and the answers worth keeping become Markdown notes — filed into a vault that is a folder on your own disk.
A vault is a directory holding base.md, a generated table of contents up to six levels deep, and a notes/ folder with one .md file per note. Before a note is written it is checked against the ones already there, so the fourth note about the same idea gets merged instead of added. Links between notes are ordinary Markdown links to files that exist.
The model is never ours: you bring your own API key to one of seven providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server — and pay that provider directly. A question sends the table of contents plus at most five relevant notes within a 24,000-character budget, and the app shows you which five it used.
Every answer kept this way becomes one of these ai notes, ready to search again months later without hunting back through old chats.

Where they differ
- Both mention AI. The difference is whose key it runs on: SumizAI never resells inference — you connect one of seven providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server) with your own API key and pay that provider directly. Check what Fluster does with the model bill before comparing prices.
- Fluster is open source, and SumizAI is not. If reading the source is what decides it for you, that is a real argument for Fluster. The guarantee SumizAI offers instead is structural rather than legal: the notes are Markdown files in a folder you chose, so they open in any editor whether or not the application is running.
- AlternativeTo's description of Fluster does not mention Markdown, so check what format your notes end up in before you fill it up. SumizAI writes standard
.mdfiles to a folder you picked, and an unpaid account can still export all of them. - AlternativeTo lists no mobile version of Fluster. SumizAI runs on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
Which one to pick
Reasons to pick Fluster
- the source is open and you want to read it
- it costs nothing
Reasons to pick SumizAI
- the notes you want already exist inside conversations with an AI model
- you want the filing — title, chapter, duplicate check — to happen without you
- you want the result as plain
.mdfiles in a folder you picked - you would rather pay your AI provider directly than have a note app resell the model
