What LLMChat is
What LLMChat is
LLMChat is an open-source, privacy-first chat interface that brings several language model providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, and local Ollama — together under one roof. The project is a Next.js and TypeScript monorepo, available both as a hosted version at llmchat.co and for self-hosting straight from the GitHub source.
Key features
Chat history is stored locally in the browser via IndexedDB rather than on a server — the developers state explicitly that no chat content lands in a database on their end. Deep Research and Pro Search modes let the model search the web and assemble more thorough answers than a single plain prompt. A plugin system with function-calling support lets the assistant reach out to external tools. The app also works as a PWA, so it can be installed on desktop or phone and used like a native program.
Who it's for
LLMChat appeals to people who want to compare answers from different model providers in one place without creating a separate account with each of them, while still caring that their conversation history doesn't sit on someone else's server. Developers appreciate being able to self-host the code from GitHub and adapt it to their own needs.
Use cases
In practice, LLMChat works well for quickly comparing how different providers answer the same research question, for building simple workflows with the modular workflow engine (plan, gather, analyze, report), or for working offline with a local model through Ollama when data can't leave the device.
Pricing and business model
The source code is free and open on GitHub, and the hosted version at llmchat.co lets you get started without installing anything. Since the app is purely an interface, the real cost of using specific models depends on your own API keys to the chosen providers — LLMChat itself doesn't charge for access to the chat engine.
Limitations and what to watch for
As a relatively young community project (a few hundred GitHub stars at the time of writing), LLMChat has no formal enterprise support or SLA guarantees — worth checking before relying on it for business-critical tasks. Local storage in IndexedDB also means clearing browser data removes conversations unless a synced account is enabled.
AI notes from several providers in one window
Because LLMChat doesn't export conversations as an organized knowledge archive, any answer worth keeping as an ai notes entry has to be copied manually into a separate notes app. Someone switching between providers throughout the day — checking which model handles a given question type best — ends up with scattered fragments that only become a real ai notes archive after manual collection.
What's worth checking before choosing
Before relying on LLMChat for daily work, check the current state of the GitHub repository's development — community projects of this kind vary in how actively they're maintained — and make sure the IndexedDB local-storage model matches the privacy requirements of your particular use.
Bottom line
LLMChat is a lightweight, open aggregator for accessing several AI engines at once, with an emphasis on keeping conversation data on the user's side. Anyone who wants worthwhile answers from such sessions to land automatically as ai notes in a searchable archive without manual copying needs a tool built specifically around that workflow.
Comparison with SumizAI
LLMChat and SumizAI differ in purpose. LLMChat is an interface for talking to multiple model providers at once, with no lasting knowledge archive beyond the browser's chat history. SumizAI turns a conversation with one of seven supported providers — including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, part of the same pool LLMChat draws from — into a Markdown note that lands in a vault the user owns: a folder with a `base.md` file, a table of contents, and a `notes/` directory. Anyone who wants a simple window for comparing models will pick LLMChat; anyone who wants these notes from such conversations to build a lasting, searchable archive without manual copying will find SumizAI the better-fitting tool.

What SumizAI is
A note-taking application built around a conversation with an AI model. You ask a question, the answer streams back, and the answers worth keeping become Markdown notes — filed into a vault that is a folder on your own disk.
A vault is a directory holding base.md, a generated table of contents up to six levels deep, and a notes/ folder with one .md file per note. Before a note is written it is checked against the ones already there, so the fourth note about the same idea gets merged instead of added. Links between notes are ordinary Markdown links to files that exist.
The model is never ours: you bring your own API key to one of seven providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server — and pay that provider directly. A question sends the table of contents plus at most five relevant notes within a 24,000-character budget, and the app shows you which five it used.
Every answer kept this way becomes one of these ai notes, ready to search again months later without hunting back through old chats.

Where they differ
- LLMChat is a place to have the conversation. SumizAI is not a chatbot — the conversation is the input, not the product. What comes out of it is a
.mdfile with a title, a place inbase.mdand a duplicate check against the notes already in the vault. If you only want to talk to a model, you do not need SumizAI. - LLMChat is open source (MIT), and SumizAI is not. If reading the source is what decides it for you, that is a real argument for LLMChat. The guarantee SumizAI offers instead is structural rather than legal: the notes are Markdown files in a folder you chose, so they open in any editor whether or not the application is running.
- AlternativeTo's description of LLMChat does not mention Markdown, so check what format your notes end up in before you fill it up. SumizAI writes standard
.mdfiles to a folder you picked, and an unpaid account can still export all of them. - LLMChat is extensible through plugins. SumizAI is not, and that is a genuine trade: you cannot bend it into something else, but there is also no plugin to keep working after the next release. What it does instead is fixed and small — a chat, a filing rule and a folder of Markdown.
- LLMChat runs in the browser. SumizAI is a desktop and mobile application, and on the desktop the vault is a folder on your own disk rather than a document in someone's cloud.
Which one to pick
Reasons to pick LLMChat
- the source is open and you want to read it
- it costs nothing
- you want to extend it with plugins
- you need it to run in a browser
Reasons to pick SumizAI
- the notes you want already exist inside conversations with an AI model
- you want the filing — title, chapter, duplicate check — to happen without you
- you want the result as plain
.mdfiles in a folder you picked - you would rather pay your AI provider directly than have a note app resell the model
