What Atua is
What Atua is
Atua is a simple macOS app that brings ChatGPT into any application on the computer through a single keyboard shortcut.
Key features
A global keyboard shortcut works inside any app on the Mac, from a text editor to a terminal, removing the need to copy and paste content between windows. The ability to create custom commands lets users assign different shortcuts to different routine tasks — one for grammar fixes, another for summarizing a passage, another for translating selected text. Minimal context switching is the core design goal: Atua is meant to stay invisible until needed, then disappear just as quickly.
Who it's for
Atua appeals to people writing a lot of text across different Mac apps — documents, emails, notes, code — who want AI help without leaving their current window. Developers modifying code, writers polishing style, and anyone who values minimizing context switches will find a tool built for exactly that workflow.
Use cases
In practice, Atua works well for quickly fixing grammar in an email before sending it, tweaking a piece of code without opening a separate browser window for ChatGPT, or summarizing a long paragraph selected in any document. The whole flow — select, press the shortcut, get the result — takes seconds instead of the minutes needed to switch apps and paste text manually, though the result never lands automatically in any ai notes entry.
Access model
Atua requires active access to ChatGPT to generate responses to selected text — the app works as an integration layer connecting any system window to the language model, not as an independent AI engine of its own.
Limitations and what to watch for
Atua's effectiveness depends on the quality of the selected text and the precision of the assigned command — with complex, multi-paragraph fragments the result tends to be less accurate than with short, clearly phrased ones. The app is macOS-only, with no Windows or Linux version.
AI notes with no lasting destination
Atua has no built-in note archive — its role ends once it generates a response at the point of text selection. Any worthwhile response the user wants to keep as an ai notes entry has to land in a separate note app manually, since Atua doesn't export interaction history in any organized format.
What's worth checking before choosing
Before installing, it's worth checking whether the default commands (grammar fixes, suggestions) cover typical use cases, or whether custom shortcuts will need to be configured for more specific tasks, like translation or summarizing code.
Bottom line
Atua is a lightweight integration layer that brings ChatGPT into any Mac app with one keyboard shortcut — convenient for spot text fixes, but without its own archive or lasting memory of conversations.
Comparison with SumizAI
Atua and SumizAI solve different problems. Atua shortens the distance between selected text and a ChatGPT response in any system window, without saving anything permanently. SumizAI is a notebook built around a full conversation with an AI model, where worthwhile answers land automatically as ai notes — Markdown files in a vault the user owns, across seven supported AI providers on the user's own API key. Anyone who wants instant, spot fixes to text in any app will pick Atua; anyone who wants these notes from full AI conversations to build a lasting, searchable archive will find SumizAI the better-fitting tool.

What SumizAI is
A note-taking application built around a conversation with an AI model. You ask a question, the answer streams back, and the answers worth keeping become Markdown notes — filed into a vault that is a folder on your own disk.
A vault is a directory holding base.md, a generated table of contents up to six levels deep, and a notes/ folder with one .md file per note. Before a note is written it is checked against the ones already there, so the fourth note about the same idea gets merged instead of added. Links between notes are ordinary Markdown links to files that exist.
The model is never ours: you bring your own API key to one of seven providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server — and pay that provider directly. A question sends the table of contents plus at most five relevant notes within a 24,000-character budget, and the app shows you which five it used.
Every answer kept this way becomes one of these ai notes, ready to search again months later without hunting back through old chats.

Where they differ
- Both mention AI. The difference is whose key it runs on: SumizAI never resells inference — you connect one of seven providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server) with your own API key and pay that provider directly. Check what Atua does with the model bill before comparing prices.
- Atua is paid software. Compare the two numbers directly: SumizAI is one dollar a month, one plan, and your AI provider bills you separately for the model you chose.
- AlternativeTo's description of Atua does not mention Markdown, so check what format your notes end up in before you fill it up. SumizAI writes standard
.mdfiles to a folder you picked, and an unpaid account can still export all of them. - AlternativeTo lists no mobile version of Atua. SumizAI runs on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
Which one to pick
Reasons to pick Atua
- it already fits how you work
Reasons to pick SumizAI
- the notes you want already exist inside conversations with an AI model
- you want the filing — title, chapter, duplicate check — to happen without you
- you want the result as plain
.mdfiles in a folder you picked - you would rather pay your AI provider directly than have a note app resell the model
