What MacGPT is
What MacGPT is
MacGPT is a simple, native macOS app that gives quick access to ChatGPT right from the menu bar, without opening a browser and hunting for the right tab. Built by Jordi Bruin, it reproduces the options found on the ChatGPT website inside a tidy, smaller window sitting under a brain icon in the menu bar.
Key features
Menu bar integration means you can keep another app in fullscreen mode and still have ChatGPT one click away. A keyboard shortcut you can record yourself opens the chat window from anywhere in the system without reaching for the mouse. An "always on top" option lets the MacGPT window float above other windows when needed, making it easier to copy pieces of a response without switching context. The app supports plugging in your own OpenAI API key, which unlocks a native, messenger-like interface (in the style of iMessage) instead of the standard browser-based ChatGPT view.
Who it's for
MacGPT appeals to Mac users who use ChatGPT often enough that opening a browser every time becomes a chore, and who want access to an AI conversation as fast as any other native system app. People working in fullscreen mode in other apps appreciate being able to summon the chat without leaving their current work context.
Use cases
In practice, MacGPT works well for quickly checking a fact while writing a document, asking for a sentence to be rephrased without switching apps, or asking a coding question while working in a code editor — all through one keyboard shortcut instead of alt-tabbing to a browser and hunting for a tab. None of those answers automatically becomes an ai notes entry, though — it's still a one-off conversation, not a growing ai notes archive.
Login and access model
First launch requires logging in with ChatGPT account credentials — the app works as a wrapper around the browser version, so it supports the same features as chat.openai.com, just packaged as a native macOS app.
Limitations and what to watch for
As a browser wrapper (unless the user connects their own API key), MacGPT depends on the same session behavior as the ChatGPT website — changes to OpenAI's web interface can affect how the app behaves. The version using your own API key comes with separate token-usage charges billed directly by OpenAI, independent of MacGPT's own price.
AI notes copied from the menu bar
MacGPT offers no built-in note archive — it's a tool for quick access to a conversation, not for building a lasting knowledge base. Any response the user wants to keep as an ai notes entry has to be copied by hand from the menu bar window into a separate note app, with no automatic export or formatting.
What's worth checking before choosing
Before buying, it's worth checking whether you want the version using your own API key (with the native chat interface) or the standard browser wrapper logging in through a ChatGPT account, since they differ in cost and billing.
Bottom line
MacGPT is a convenient shortcut to ChatGPT right from the macOS menu bar — great for quick questions mid-work, but without any mechanism for building an archive out of conversations.
Comparison with SumizAI
MacGPT and SumizAI differ fundamentally in purpose. MacGPT is convenient menu-bar chat access with no lasting archive. SumizAI turns worthwhile answers from a conversation with an AI model into these notes — Markdown files landing automatically in a vault the user owns, with seven supported AI providers on the user's own API key, including Anthropic and OpenAI. Anyone who wants quick menu-bar access to ChatGPT without extra features will pick MacGPT; anyone who wants these notes from conversations to build an organized, searchable archive without manual copying will find SumizAI the better-fitting tool.

What SumizAI is
A note-taking application built around a conversation with an AI model. You ask a question, the answer streams back, and the answers worth keeping become Markdown notes — filed into a vault that is a folder on your own disk.
A vault is a directory holding base.md, a generated table of contents up to six levels deep, and a notes/ folder with one .md file per note. Before a note is written it is checked against the ones already there, so the fourth note about the same idea gets merged instead of added. Links between notes are ordinary Markdown links to files that exist.
The model is never ours: you bring your own API key to one of seven providers — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, a local Ollama or your own server — and pay that provider directly. A question sends the table of contents plus at most five relevant notes within a 24,000-character budget, and the app shows you which five it used.
Every answer kept this way becomes one of these ai notes, ready to search again months later without hunting back through old chats.

Where they differ
- MacGPT is a place to have the conversation. SumizAI is not a chatbot — the conversation is the input, not the product. What comes out of it is a
.mdfile with a title, a place inbase.mdand a duplicate check against the notes already in the vault. If you only want to talk to a model, you do not need SumizAI. - MacGPT is paid software. Compare the two numbers directly: SumizAI is one dollar a month, one plan, and your AI provider bills you separately for the model you chose.
- AlternativeTo's description of MacGPT does not mention Markdown, so check what format your notes end up in before you fill it up. SumizAI writes standard
.mdfiles to a folder you picked, and an unpaid account can still export all of them. - AlternativeTo lists no mobile version of MacGPT. SumizAI runs on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
Which one to pick
Reasons to pick MacGPT
- it already fits how you work
Reasons to pick SumizAI
- the notes you want already exist inside conversations with an AI model
- you want the filing — title, chapter, duplicate check — to happen without you
- you want the result as plain
.mdfiles in a folder you picked - you would rather pay your AI provider directly than have a note app resell the model
